We’ll try and give you as much information about what to expect from both the projects you’ll be serving in and our involvement in the placements. Below is a bit of a summary of what you can expect for the placements throughout 2009. Major details of the exact projects involved are listed below.

Applications for the opportunities listed below are now all open. There are 7 different projects involved in Durban with placements in Spring and Autumn, lasting from 3, 6 or 9 months. You can apply with the forms on this page (GO>>).

The 2009 Placements

1. Indlela
When and how long?:
3 months from April and September
Description:
Indlela was formed as a covering body whose primary objective is to oversee the work carried out by a number of projects working into the North Durban area. Projects they run include, counselling, life skills in schools, soup kitchens which feed crèches in Amaoti on a daily basis and Fair Haven’s babies home.

2. KwaCare
When and how long?:

3 months from April and September
Description:
KwaCare, a ministry of His Church, was established in 1993 and is a Non-Profit Organisation. Their goal is to change the lives of people in the township of KwaDabeka by impacting them spiritually, emotionally and physically.  The organisation has recently expanded and now includes a Church plant, community outreach branch and an Orphans village project.

3. Umuzi Wethemba KwaJesu
When and how long?:
3 months from April
Description:
Umuzi Wethemba’s home-based care programme aims to equip volunteer care-givers in communities to help those who are too sick to attend a clinic, and to provide the basic medical expertise that are needed for these patients.  The project relies on the work of volunteers in the community to care for those who are sick.

4. St. Martin’s Children’s Home
When and how long?:
3 months from April
Description:
St. Martin’s Diocesan Home provides residential care for children committed to the Home by a court of law.  Such children may be orphaned, abandoned, abused and in need of special care. In addition to the home, the project started a home school in 2006, teaching seven children who had been suspended from mainstream school.

5. St Thomas Mission Outreach
When and how long?:

6 months from March
Description:
The partnership between St Thomas and the UKZN Social Work Department began in 2005 to try to meet the growing needs of orphans and vulnerable children in the Cato Manor area by providing care and support.   They aim to build self-esteem through psycho-social counseling and involvement with life skills activities.

6. World Changers Academy
When and how long?:

6 months from March
Description:
World Changers Academy (WCA) is all about helping young people to change their own lives for the better so that they can go out and change the world for good. As a result of WCA, schools are being greatly impacted by passionate student leaders. Communities are being uplifted with the help of the community leaders who have attended WCA leadership courses and through students empowered through WCA life skills courses.  Families are being healed through the healed students.

7. The SON Centre care project
When and how long?:

6 or 9 months from March
Description:
The project aims to affect the lives of young people while in school with a good values and morals base.  
The project runs with placements running sports development programmes as a sports coordinator with the school staff. As part of the school programme the sport coordinator is in charge of all sporting periods during the school day...

Advance Information
Soul Action/Transform will provide you with an overview about your placement (a specific itinerary and orientation will be given to you at the beginning of your placement). This will mean you’ll have a knowledge of the project(s) you’ll be serving in and what you’ll be expected to do. However, final costs, payment deadlines and specific dates of flights and placements will be decided in due course.

Interview and Orientation
If you apply you'll be invited to attend an interview where you'll get to meet some of the team who will organise your placement, and find out a bit more about the placement itself. Interview dates are as follows:
Interview dates for Sping teams:
10th and 11th October 2008
Interview dates for Autumn teams:
30th April

After the interview, once your place on a team is confirmed, you'll be asked to attend an orientation event. The orientation week will introduce you to the country and region you will be serving. As well as spending time in prayer and worship, you'll get to know potential team mates and learn about the issues facing the area.

Orientations dates for teams leaving in Spring:
1st- - 5th December
Orientation dates for teams leaving in Autumn:
1st – 4th June

Costs

This is just a rough guide, but we expect 3 month teams to be in the region of £3000 with teams of other lengths costing proportionately more depending on how long you are in Durban for.
