Project name:
Umuzi Wethemba KwaJesu
Project location:
Umhlali, KwaZulu-Natal North Coast
What is the need?
KwaZulu-Natal has the highest prevalence of people with HIV/AIDS in all of South Africa. The effects of the disease are immense; declining health, death, orphaned children, social stigma and family breakdown to name just a few. Combine these with the appalling poverty faced by those who live in the townships surrounding Umhlali and you find that HIV/AIDS has a devastating impact on not just those who have the disease…
What does the project do?
Umuzi Wethemba KwaJesu offers a variety of services to those who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. These services include a clinic that provides medical care for those who are HIV positive, as well as for general patients, voluntary counselling and testing, a support group for those who are HIV positive, home-based care for those who are too ill to attend the clinic and monitoring of those who are sick so that they take their TB and antiretroviral medication correctly. Plus Umuzi Wethemba KwaJesu runs a skills development group to help individuals support themselves by generating their own income, and they are also involved in HIV and life skills education programmes in schools, farms and businesses.
Who is helped?
The project serves both adults and children, largely from the townships and poor communities in the area, though some work is also done in higher income areas. It is estimated that the clinic serves around 350 people each month, with the homecare provision meeting the needs of an additional 200 people per month. On top of this, 400 children benefit from Umuzi Wethemba's HIV/AIDS and Lifeskills education programmes each term.
